Housing Department Youth Intern

Reports to: Pamela Mitchell, Housing Manager

Anticipated Start Date: July 5, 2021

Terms of Employment: Non-permanent, Part-Time


To provide Indigenous youth with quality employment opportunities that will give them work experience and skills training to help improve housing outcomes in their communities and to enable their pursuit of longer-term employment in the housing sector.

Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Housing Manager, the Housing Department Youth Intern will assist with the day-to-day administrative duties as delegated by the Housing Manager. The Housing Department Youth Intern will assist with answering phones, filing documents, database filing of housing related information, email correspondence, correspondence with housing applicants and Malahat Nation tenants and assisting with providing housing related information to the community. The Housing Department Youth Intern will also accompany the Operations and Maintenance Manager with on-site tenant and housing related requests.

This is a contract position starting July 5th and ending March 31st, 2022 with the potential to extend pending funding approval. Part-time hours will be Tuesday to Thursday 9am to 4pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Answer and direct calls, take and relay messages, check voicemails

· Monitor housing@malahatnation.com email and direct faxes and messages

· Respond to emails as delegated by Housing Manager

· Create maintenance requests for tenants, track requests and file once completed

· File housing paperwork

· Database applications and housing related information on Excel and online.

· Assist Operations and Maintenance Manager with tenant repair and renovation requests.

· Assist Housing Manager with complaints filed by tenants

· Assist with relaying housing related information to community members

· Correspond with housing applicants and collect required documents

· Correspond with tenants and process relative documents

· Assist Housing Manager with tenant relations

· Assist with relaying housing related information to community members

· Other tasks as required by the Housing Manager

Credentials and Qualifications

· Driver’s license preferred

· Administration experience is an asset

· Indigenous youth between the ages of 15 and 30

· Preference given to Malahat members

The ideal candidate will have the following skills:

  • Communication – strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Comfortable talking to community members and tenants
  • Time Management – candidate must be on time and available during work hours
  • Team Player – candidate enjoys working in a team setting
  • Motivated and eager to learn
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and other relative computer programs
  • Ability to abide by confidentiality guidelines and requirements
  • Good interpersonal skills – ability to understand and empathize with varying perspectives


· Compensation dependent upon experience, $16-$19/hour
