Malahat Nation Fibre Network Upgrade Project
Malahat Nation has relied on cable internet service provided by Rogers (formerly Shaw) for over two decades. While this service has historically met our needs, increasing demand from streaming services, virtual meetings, environmental sensors, and numerous connected devices has begun to strain our existing coaxial infrastructure, resulting in slower speeds and inconsistent connectivity.
Recognizing the importance of reliable, high-speed internet, Malahat Nation has partnered with major Internet Service Providers, Rogers and Telus, and CIRA, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority, to significantly upgrade our network infrastructure through the introduction of fibre optic technology. Fibre optic internet provides significantly faster, more reliable, and scalable connectivity, essential for both residential and commercial use.
Fibre Optic Upgrade: Rogers will bring fibre connectivity directly to our business park, establishing a new network node to significantly improve the speed and reliability of our existing cable service.
Community-Wide Fibre Expansion: Telus is deploying a comprehensive fibre network across both the community and the business park. Upon completion, all Malahat Nation members will have the opportunity to access Telus's high-speed fibre services.
Sovereign Fibre Network: We are also independently establishing our own sovereign fibre network to connect major office buildings, enhancing our internal connectivity, security, and operational resilience.
Seamless Office Transition: Upgrading office infrastructure to fibre will be carried out meticulously to ensure a seamless transition, minimizing disruptions for our nearly 100 office staff who depend heavily on reliable internet connectivity for their daily operations.
Future-Ready Infrastructure: This fibre upgrade is designed with future expansions in mind, extending connectivity to critical new developments such as upcoming water and wastewater facilities and planned residential projects.
This project represents a major step forward in Malahat Nation’s technological infrastructure, ensuring robust, future-proof connectivity that meets the growing demands of our community and supports sustainable development and growth.
Stay tuned for updates as we progress toward faster, more reliable connectivity for everyone at Malahat Nation.
