Detailed Design of New Cemetery Space

Detailed Design of New Cemetery Space

Started: September 19, 2024
Target: August 28, 2026

Overview

The Malahat Nation is at a critical point regarding its cemetery services. The community’s current cemetery is reaching its capacity limit, with only a few burial lots remaining. In 2023, the Nation selected a site for a new cemetery and undertook studies to ensure that the location, ground conditions, and slopes were suitable for cemetery operations and that the site could provide sufficient inventory for decades to come. To advance the project, Chief and Council engaged LEES + Associates to further assess the new cemetery site and develop a conceptual cemetery design. The design concept for the new cemetery has allowed for a thoughtful approach to add immediate burial capacity while also introducing the potential to provide new services and an area for the repatriation of Ancestors. Looking ahead, the careful planning and development of this cemetery ensure that it will serve the Malahat Nation for the next 100 years. With a focus on sustainability and cultural sensitivity, the cemetery will not only meet the immediate needs of the community but also provide a lasting, respectful space for future generations. This long-term vision underscores the commitment to honouring both the past and the future, creating a sacred place that will stand the test of time. The next phase of the project planning is detailed design. Lees + Associates are continuing to support Malahat Nation in this work. They will complete the construction drawings and tender documentation needed to procure a civil contractor for construction, and will provide contract administration support.

Project Timeline

  • Phase 1: Contract Start Up

    Completed

    Ongoing - Ongoing

Phase 1 will set the stage for the project with a start-up meeting to review key project parameters via videoconference with our team and the City’s project team, where we will:  Introduce the project team members.  Discuss and confirm the scope of work, key milestones and schedule.  Confirm communications protocol, billing procedures, and other administrative items relating to the contract, including establishing a regular bi-weekly meeting schedule.
  • Phase 2: Design Development

    Completed

    Ongoing - Ongoing

We will generate a Design Development (DD) drawing set based on the concept design work. This set of drawings will be essential in preparing the construction drawings for future phases. In this Phase, LEES will work with various sub-consultants to validate the proposed concept design. This phase will include a Class C cost estimate, which will help determine construction phasing, if necessary.
  • Phase 3: 75% Construction Drawings

    Completed

    Ongoing - Ongoing

Following the DD Drawings, we will work with various sub-consultants to produce a 75% Construction Drawing (CD) set for phase 1 development. This phase will include specification notes on the drawings and a Class B cost estimate.
  • Phase 4: 100% Construction Drawings

    In Progress

    Ongoing - Ongoing

In this phase, our team will refine the CD set to incorporate comments from Phase 3 to create a 100% CD package. This package will include 100% specifications on drawings and a Class A cost estimate.
  • Phase 5: Tender Stage

    Not Started

    Ongoing - Ongoing

During this phase, our team will produce Issue for Tender (IFT) status drawings, specifications on drawings, and a schedule of quantities. We will assist Malahat Nation with the tendering process by answering proponent questions, issuing addenda, and providing a recommendation for the award letter.
