Malahat Nation Wildlife Camera Study

Malahat Nation Wildlife Camera Study

Started: June 3, 2025
Target: April 1, 2026

Overview

Malahat Lands & Environment are placing wildlife cameras through the forest to better understand how our non-human relatives live on and use the land as part of the Malahat Community!

Pictures from the cameras will be used to shed light on what kind of wildlife uses the land, how they use the land, and give an idea of population sizes. Lands & Environment is using a special software to screen out any pictures of human activity, and no photos of any kind will be accessible outside the Nation. We'll be sharing pictures of resident wildlife as the project continues, so stay tuned to this page for updates!

This project aims to help identify priority wildlife areas for conservation so we can protect our wild relatives and ensure development on the reserve doesn't leave them stranded!

    Aug 2025 - Ongoing

Malahat Lands & Environment will periodically retrieve photos from the cameras and sort through photos to categorize and analyze wildlife in the pictures! Any photos containing people, vehicles, or non-wildlife imagery will be deleted and not kept as part of this study
